How to Make Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Homemade pasta sauce the whole family will enjoy, whether it’s served over pasta, gluten free noodles or low carb zoodles! A hearty meat sauce made healthy with lots of vegetables but so delicious, no one will notice they’re there 😉

I posted the photo below as a sneak peak for this recipe yesterday, with spaghetti meat sauce on all of the different noodles and zoodles we eat in our family and I was so surprised by the reaction. Turns out a lot of you are just like me! Making different versions of the same meal to appease everyone. Sometimes that’s just the way it is, no matter how delicious the dish. There might be a difference in taste, health goals, toddlers who are going through ‘ew that’s green phrase’ 😒

That’s the great thing about homemade pasta sauce. They’re so versatile, hearty, easy to load up with nutrient dense veggies and serve over a number of different options BUT most importantly, always a crowd pleaser!

This recipe also makes 6 servings, so whether it’s leftovers the next day if I know we’re going to have a busy week or freezing it to use the next time we have a spaghetti night, it’s perfect for meal planning ahead. Have it on your whole wheat pasta one night and over baked veggies the next day for lunch!

Budget Meals

This meat sauce also comes in pretty good on price as well at $2.85 per serving. Since I make majority of our meals from scratch I make recipes more affordable by buying certain items I use in bulk from Costco

These are items I usually always have on hand that definitely help when making homemade pasta sauce:

  • I usually buy my Ground Beef and split the package into 3 servings (roughly 1.5lbs each) keep what I need out to use right away and freeze the rest 
  • Tomato sauce, I love there organic Kirkland crushed tomatoes. It’s way more affordable than buying them buy the can and I try and use organic whether I can
  • Organic tomato paste, same deal. It’s super affordable and always great to have on hand. 

I listed this homemade spaghetti sauce as a 6 serving dish because I never want to be that blogger that makes their servings so small people are like ‘what the heck’ but depending on your style of eating this recipe realistically makes between 6-8 servings. Pretty awesome right?


Healthy Homemade Pasta Sauce

  • Yield: 6 Servings


  • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 1/2 Lbs of Ground Beef
  • 1 Cup of Diced Cooking Onion
  • 1 Cup of Diced Bell Pepper (I used Red and Green)
  • 1 Cup of Chopped Brown Mushrooms
  • 1 Tbsp of Minced Garlic
  • 1 Small Can of Tomato Paste
  • 2 398ml Cans of Crushed Tomatoes
  • 1 Tbsp of Brown Sugar
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1 Tbsp of Oregano
  • 1 Tbsp of Basil (I used fresh)
  • 1 Tsp of Garlic Powder
  • 2 Tsp of Sea Salt
  • 1/2 Tsp of Black Pepper
  • 1/4 Tsp of Red Chilli Flakes


  1. In a large pot on medium, heat olive and add onions to sauté for roughly 3 mins or until slightly translucent and fragrant
  2. Add garlic and sauté for another minute adding in the peppers and mushrooms and continue to sauté for another 3 minutes or until peppers are tender
  3. Add ground beef, oregano, garlic powder and salt and pepper and allow to cook until beef is fully browned and cooked
  4. Turn heat to low and add tomato paste and crushed tomatoes and stir to combine
  5. Add sugar, basil, red chili flakes and bay leaf and allow to simmer for roughly 10 minutes allowing the flavours to merry, stirring occasional so nothing burns to the bottom
  6. Remove from heat and remove bay leaf and serve over your favourite noodles or zoodles
